HYDRO-EXPANSIVE RUBBERS are generally mixtures of synthetic and natural rubbers activated by specific polymers that expand in contact with water. Depending on the type of rubber, the balance of the mixture, the properties and quantity of reactive polymer, different reaction grades are obtained. The expansion speed is related to the possibility of water penetrating through the surfaces: higher the specific surface area available, higher it is.
Sealgum
Sealing waterstops made from a special blend of natural and synthetic rubbers and hydrophilic, hydroexpansive agents: on contact with water, they increase in volume by up to more than 3 times their original size (when used in environments containing seawater, expansion will still occur, but with a slight reduction in volume). Sealgum waterstops are simple and easy to install and do not require any special substrate preparation, preformed grooves, etc. The expansion of Sealgum may vary depending on the type of water in which they are immersed. Sealgum waterstops are available in different cross-sections: Sealgum 20.05 = 20x5 mm; Sealgum 20.10 = 20x10 mm; Sealgum 20.20 = 20x20 mm; Sealgum 50.05 = 50x5 mm; Sealgum 100.05 = 100x5 mm.

The adhesive replaces the more traditional method of securing these watertight systems, which involves nailing.
